10/20 ~ It's a Girl!

PRESS RELEASE

Date: October 20, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

IT’S A GIRL

Aldergrove – What is 1.8 meters (6 feet) tall and weighing in at over 58 kg (129 lbs), with a long neck and legs and lots of spots; and of course cute as ever - well it is the latest addition to our Giraffe family! On Sunday at approximately 9 pm, the Greater Vancouver Zoo welcomed the birth of a beautiful baby girl Rothschild’s Giraffe.

Eleah (the mother) had a wonderful birth and her baby girl is standing comfortably on her own. The Zoo Veterinarian Dr. Burton was there for the delivery and gave her a “positive baby check-up”.  Eleah is not interested in nursing the baby, so zoo staff has taken over as her surrogate moms. All members of her Giraffe family (mom, dad and brother) are able to touch and communicate with the baby over a safety wall.

For the most part we want quiet time for the baby, but she is available for her public debut tomorrow (October 21st) from 1 – 2 pm through the windows of the Giraffe house.

The average female giraffe can reach a height of 4.5 meters (15 feet) tall and can weight up to 1,000 kg (2200 lbs).
