05/07 ~ SPIDER MONKEY KILLED AND ANOTHER IS MISSING
Date: May 7, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPIDER MONKEY KILLED AND ANOTHER IS MISSING
Aldergrove – Today in the early hours of the morning, someone broke into the Zoo and cut into our Spider Monkey enclosure killing our male and our female is now missing. All of the staff and volunteers are shocked and devastated with the loss of one of our family members and is pleading for your help in getting back our dear Mia.
Jocko (male) and Mia (female) have made the Greater Vancouver Zoo their home for the last 15 years, since arriving from a Zoo in Eastern Canada when they were both approximately two years old. The couple never had children because Mia has reproductive problems, but they definitely were inseparably. Life expectancy of spider monkeys is approximately 40 years.
We believe Jocko was defending both his mate and his home, when someone cut open their outdoor enclosure with bolt cutters in the middle of the night. Jocko’s body has been sent in for a complete necropsy, but preliminary findings from the necropsy indicate a skull fracture.
A full investigation has begun with the Langley RCMP and if anyone finds her, we urge you not to try to reach out to her as we are sure she is traumatized and might react; but instead call the RCMP at 604.532.3200 or the Zoo at 604.856.6825 immediately.
