A COUPLE OF FOXES MAKE GVZOO THEIR HOME

Aldergrove – 1 male and 1 female Arctic Fox have made the Greater Vancouver Zoo their home, along with a brand new enclosure just built for them.

Dempster (our male) and Alaska (our female) sprung out into their new enclosure on Wednesday April 16, 2008, and haven’t stopped exploring and chasing each other around since! The couple both has a white furry coat for now, but you better hurry as the season changes so does their coat. Soon they will be sporting a dark brown or grey coat for the summer months, as their coat provides a great camouflage in each season so that they will blend easily into their environment.

Arctic Foxes originate in the wild from Northern North America, Eurasia, Greenland and Iceland; but our cute couple arrived from the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg. Over the past century their range in the wild has been pushed northward due to climate change. Alaska (our female) is 2 years old and Dempster (our male) is 3 years old. Arctic Foxes live up to 5 years in the wild and up to 16 years in captivity.

Be sure to bring the whole family out for this Earth Day weekend and drop by the Arctic Foxes new home to say hello and to watch them play!
