Date: March 6, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2008 ROBERT BATEMAN GET TO KNOW CONTEST

Aldergrove – 2008 Robert Bateman Get to Know Contest is launching at most Zoos and Aquariums, including the Greater Vancouver Zoo, across Canada today. The contest is in its 9th year and open to anyone 19 years or younger, who are willing to get to know their neighbours and their background.

This is the first year for the Greater Vancouver Zoo to be involved in this extremely unique program that gives our youth a deeper understanding of wildlife and the environment. Invited to our launch and to speak are: Langley Deputy Mayor Mel Kositsky, Environment Canada - Canadian Wildlife Services Wildlife Biologist Rene McKibbin and of the Greater Vancouver Zoo - Animal Care Manager Jamie Dorgan.  The Zoo has invited students from 3 different schools in the Fraser Valley, which vary in grades from Kindergarten to Grade 4 students.

Get to Know Writing and Art Contest encourages youth to get outdoors and share with others what they have discovered.  “The Robert Bateman Get to Know Program is based on the philosophy that caring for the planet begins with getting to know the names of our neighbours of other species (plants and wildlife).“

All entries whether artwork (depicts plant or animal species from our neighborhood), or writing (40 word maximum focused on the environment and how we can help protect it and what you are doing to preserve our planet); must be postmarked no later than EARTH DAY – April 22, 2008.

For further details on the contest, please visit www.gettoknow.ca – good luck!
