12/22 ~ Baby Giraffe Born
Greater Vancouver Zoo – PRESS RELEASE
Date: December 22, 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BABY GIRAFFE BORN
Aldergrove – On Thursday, December 20 at approximately 3:10 pm, Eleah (our female Giraffe), gave birth to her first male baby. The baby boy is weighing in at approximately 144 lbs and is 6’1” in height.
Eleah showed a very strong interest at first for the baby, but when the baby did not want to nurse naturally the Zoo staff had to intervene. The animal care staff worked quickly to set up a temporary heated nursery close by the parents and are hand-rearing the baby. The baby is being monitored 24 hours a day by our dedicated animal care staff and his mother, Eleah, and father, Jafari are both doing fine.
As we are still in the very early stages of this baby’s life, we would ask all supporters of the Zoo to respect the privacy needed for this very sensitive time for our newborn boy. The baby is currently off display and no viewing or photos will be allowed at this time.
Giraffes are one of the world’s tallest land mammals. They are known for their long necks, long legs and spotted patterns.
