Greater Vancouver Zoo – PRESS RELEASE
Date: May 5, 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPRING HAS OFFICIALLY SPRUNG AT THE ZOO WITH NEW BABIES!
Aldergrove – We are excited to announce several new baby arrivals at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in the last few days!
Early Thursday morning our Zebra mother “Sahara” and father “Sierra” delivered their first foal – a handsome boy! Sahara successfully delivered the foal on her own and wants to nurse although, the young male is unsure how to receive the milk; therefore the animal care staff have taken over the regular bottle feedings every few hours. The young male is approximately 3’ in height and weights roughly 70 pounds. The mother and baby will remain in the nursery area for a few days, while being monitored very closely as we are in the very early stages of this new birth for our first time mom “Sahara”.
Also on Thursday morning Squirrel Monkey mother “MJ” delivered a new baby and then the next day mother Squirrel Monkey “Shyllo” welcomed a new baby as well! Both mothers and babies are doing very well. As squirrel monkey babies do not leave their mother’s body, the estimate weight of the newborns is approximately 3 – 7 ounces.
In the North American section not to be outdone, Muskox mother “Fluffy” and mother “Maisie” both delivered healthy calves yesterday and today as well. The babies are approximately 1.5’ in height and weigh 20 pounds.
