EXPERIENCE FALCONRY AT THE ZOO!

Gary Worley (our master falconer) and his team of Radical Raptors are in their off season (November through April) and are taking a much needed rest, therefore there will be no free flying presentations. Although you still might see some of the falconers around training, cleaning and feeding which all still must go on year round!

During the peak season (May through September), the 20-30 minute narrated Birds of Prey flying presentations are every day at 12, 2 & 4 pm.

 

 

For more than 30 years Gary has thrilled audiences of all ages on three continents, educating and training adults and children alike about raptors and the traditions of Falconry. He is recognized as one of the world’s most experienced falconers and birds of prey handlers. Most recently Gary became the recipient of the “BC Entrepreneur of the Year” award, in the category of “Exceptional Sharing of Knowledge and Teaching of Others” in 2005!

 

 

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT? Why not try a "Close Encounter of the Bird Kind".

In addition to the daily presentations, Gary and his team offer ultimate hands-on experience through the following courses for 2011:

  1. Experience Days - For centuries man has been captivated by the majesty of "Birds of Prey". Now you too can experience the chance of a lifetime! Join one of our falconers on a half day or full day Hands on Birds of Prey Experience. Learn how to handle and fly some of nature's most incredible birds including: owls, hawks and falcons. Courses are offered throughout the year weather permitting. These experiences are available to everyone 12 years of age and older (children under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Spectators are also welcome, but must pay zoo entrance fee.

    Half day courses start at 1 pm - 4 pm and full day course from 10 am - 4 pm. **Don't forget your camera!  Cost for half day is $65 + GST and the full day is $120 + GST.

  2. Summer Camp for Kids (August 1st - 5th) - Looking for a unique experience during summer holidays? Interested in birds? Here is a opportunity of a lifetime - summer camp with Raptors! This week long camp is open to children between the age of 10 and 15 years old. Participants will learn to handle, fly and train hawks, owls and falcons; as well as assisting in the "Radical Raptors Birds of Prey" presentations. They will also learn what is involved in the day to day management of raptors, the law, conservation of birds of prey and much, much more!
    Cost is $175 + GST per person (course will only run if there are a minimum of 4 people booked). 

  3. Beginners Falconry and Birds of Prey Management Course (TBA) - Designed for those who may be considering taking up falconry or who are currently working with raptors. This course will guide you through the basic training, handling, accommodations, equipment, captive breeding, presentations, laws and day-to-day management of owls, hawks, falcons and eagles. Open to anyone 14 years of age and up. Course runs from 10 am - 4 pm daily. **make sure you bring old clothes as you will get dirty.
    Cost is $450 + GST

 

The Radical Raptors Summer camp was the highlight of my summer.  i learned how to handle and care for birds and it was fun just holding them.  Especially the owls.  They're so cool!  I got to prepare their food, clean their pens and help ut in the shows.  We got to make bird stuff like jesses and bewits and learned about the anatomy of birds of prey.  it's awesome when the birds fly to you. And afterwards, if you're old enough, you may get to volunteer! Emily
